.... { whale watching } ....

This weekend found us out on the waters of Dana Point, in search of migratory whales.
A perfect opportunity to pull together a nautical inspired look.

The early morning weather was perfection...
glassy waters and clear warm skies...

Once aboard I quickly replaced the sun protecting Panama..
with my navy beret... which I knew would be able to withstand the strong breezes to come...
( I wanted to make it home with my beloved Panama )

The nautical inspired outfit was a perfect opportunity to wear my
red white and blue vintage brooch necklace.
A statement necklace this intricate and bold...
always calls for just the right ensemble to balance it out.

The cornerstone of the necklace is a very vintage beetlefrom Czechoslovakia
added to  a whole summers worth of vintage brooch collecting.
My DIY for making your own brooch necklace can be found here.

One of the impetuses or our trip out to sea...
some family time...
creating some memories with just the three of us.

With my two oldest being away at college...
I realize the three of us need our own histories together...

I realized this week...
that I haven't been doing very well by my youngest...
not that I didn't want to... but...

Sometimes i just don't know the right balance...
of what individuals this age want or need.
But is certainly my responsibility to make sure my children know they come first...
before a blog or business....

The power of communicating.
I am so proud and so very grateful for finding out what I did this week..
such a gift...
Parenting mistakes are all too easy to make....
but when we know better...we can truly do better.
My heart is full knowing I am still needed.

as always my dear friends

I wish you love and joy
as you style your life

  2. That was a bit heart wrenching to read. I will give my boys an extra cuddle tomorrow just to let them know again that they're important. As a mum to toddlers I blog as an escape but thanks for helping me keep grounded with what's important! Hope you saw some whales too xo

    1. i think blogging as a mum is a very healthy pursuit... I wish it had been available to me when mine were young. I know the connections and friendships would have rounded out that stage of life quite nicely. I know I seem to always searching for the balance between self and being an intentional and adoring mom.

Kelly thank you for taking the time to leave a comment!

    1. Catherine if you make one be sure and show me, I'd love to see your creation! How goes the birthday plans? I am sorry I haven't made much progress with the crown... tracking down the needed supplies has been unsuccessful. I'd love to hear all about your celebratory party plans!!!

Yes, I am grateful my son, who is always the last person to feel comfortable to express his feelings was able to finally confide his... It is my hope we can foster more honest dialogues as a family. Thank you for your lovely comment my dear!

    2. I agree tracking down supplies is always a problem for me...when I see all your creations I often wonder WHERE IN THE WORLD do you find them? There's a fabulous bead store on de la Guerra Street in Santa Barbara, and quite a few thrift stores on Main Street in Ventura, but YOUR gems always look so rich!

Party plans are coming along, Costa Rica trip immediately after party has sort of way-laid my "crown" search.....but I still look out for one whenever I'm "out".

    3. My question to you my dear.... Why don't YOU have a blog??? i can tell you live such an interesting life... I would love to learn and see more!!

Costa Rica sounds so interesting and beautiful... such a busy time for a fabulous lady! Early birthday wishes to you my dear! I am celebrating mine this weekend! I am having a crown and crosses theme! I am still on the lookout for crowns for us both!!!

  8. I'm in the same boat. My older one is away at college and the younger one is home. He is our shyer one so he feels like now all the attention is on him and he doesn't like that either. This is a strange time I have to agree. Time to create a new life for ourselves and that is a little scary.

    1. I agree Dee... I think it's really hard to find the right amount of attention . I have realized over the last few years families are always transitioning to meet the needs of evolving individuals .... I just wish there were better guide books along the way :)

I adore your blog and admire your camera presence! Was that something you have always done... or a newly developed talent? Thank you for visiting and commenting my dear!

  13. Congrats on good parenting! The fact that he could articulate what he was feeling, and the fact that you responded as you did, points to health. It's hard to speak about those kinds of things and they often get buried and compounded. Did he take any of the pictures or would he like to? Maybe that's another way to share a mutual endeavor; he can join you in your passion for styling, creating, and blogging.

    1. Yes Jean, he is the resident photographer for my blog. I have enjoyed watching his expertise grow over the last year. He also has friends deep into the creative visual arts... So I think he has also been bitten by the creative bug ... a camera was his Christmas wish! Funny, until you mentioned it... I hadn't realized this blog has also been a commonality for my son and I, and it has provided him a very flexible side job. Thank you so much for this reminder my friend!

  14. You must have a great relationship with your son if he felt comfortable telling you that! I have three small boys, so I will remember this when my baby is the last one in the house!!! It's great to know they always need their mamas :)

  27. As a mum of three myself, I know it's hard to balance out time spent with each of them. While it is lovely to be all together as a family, it is also good to have one-to-one time with them, but that can be difficult to carve out...
It sounds as though you had a great day at sea, and looked stunning doing it! The outfit is so stylish, especially the necklace. And the blue sea and sky are beautiful. xxxx
