Styling the courtyard.....

I finished my favorite part of designing a living space....the accessorizing!

Starting with my courtyard edited back to neutral after spring, I layered in all of my favorite outdoor pieces.
This view of the courtyard is from the living room.  I always style this shelf so it looks great inside the house as well as in the courtyard itself.  It is one of the tricks I have learned from living in a small, open house.  The spaces will appear larger when the views are complementary, your eye is automatically taken farther, giving a larger feel to the space.
This is the same shelf from the courtyard looking into the living room.  From either vantage point it reads attractive and the same design scheme is carried through in both  views.

On the coffee table, I use a mirror which adds some sparkle to the space.  At night the shells are replaced with two dozen silver tea candles.

Our family's collection of shells are highlighted throughout the courtyard.  I love the aesthetic of the shells massed together, giving them more presence in the space. But I especially love bringing out some family history and happy beach memories.

I edited most all the floral color from the courtyard.  I wanted to neutralize the palette so as not to compete with the bold textiles and not overpower the shell collections.  That being said I just couldn't resist one big pop of Shasta daisies.  They just shout summer to me!

My favorite addition to my outside designs has been the addition of citrus. Living in Southern California, it speaks to the groves, some of which are still in the nearby areas.  I have found they will last up to a month outside and they bring a dramatic and fresh pop of natural color.

So there it is.  My courtyard is ready for it's first summer gathering! Wishing you a fun filled summer!

  2. It is quite lovely, Tamera. Thanks for telling us the steps you take. It may seem obvious but for us decorating dummies, it is a blessed how-to. You make it seem so simple and easy. I think I have some accessorizing to do!
